Job Overview

This role is embedded in the Operations group within our Global Operations team at our new state-of-the-art device manufacturing facility in North Charleston, South Carolina. Together with the rest of your team, you will drive and support the development of our tool shop and processes and the respective molded components used for SHL’s autoinjector systems.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: performing DFMA, tooling and equipment development and improvement as well as maintainens - Bring our toolmakers to the next level.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage projects within cross-functional teams from concept through implementation, ensuring alignment with timelines, resource allocation, quality standards, and budget requirements.
  • Oversee the repair and maintenance of molds, including welding, machining, and surface finishing, to restore molds to operational specifications.
  • Inspect and assess molds to identify wear, damage, or repair needs, ensuring mold longevity and consistent product quality.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of mold repair history to support traceability and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Design, fabricate, and machine high-precision replacement parts for equipment and machinery within the facility.
  • Operate manual lathes, milling machines, grinders, and other machining tools to manufacture parts in accordance with technical specifications.
  • Ensure all replacement parts meet dimensional accuracy, tolerance, and quality standards to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts for mechanical failures in molds and equipment, delivering timely and effective solutions.
  • Collaborate with the maintenance team to perform root cause analysis of breakdowns and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate machining equipment for mold repair and part production, ensuring proper calibration and optimal performance.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on machinery and molds to maintain operational efficiency and reliability.
  • Proactively identify and address potential issues, maintaining detailed records of maintenance activities.
  • Supervise and coordinate a team of machinists and maintenance personnel, ensuring high-quality output and operational efficiency.
  • Mentor and train team members to enhance technical skills and overall performance.
  • Oversee daily operations of the repair area, ensuring tasks are completed on time and according to specifications.
  • Plan and allocate resources effectively to minimize downtime and maximize productivity.
  • Lead the development and implementation of a dedicated repair area focused on mold repair and parts fabrication.
  • Drive the integration of advanced technologies (e.g., automation) to improve repair processes and increase operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with management and engineering teams to identify technology requirements and oversee the installation of new equipment.
  • Train and support team members in adopting new technologies and techniques.
  • Work closely with production, engineering, and quality teams to understand mold and part requirements.
  • Provide recommendations to improve mold design, part manufacturing, and maintenance strategies.
  • Travel internationally for specialized training with expert mold technicians to advance repair and troubleshooting capabilities.

Skills and Qualification 

  • Proven leadership or supervisory experience managing machinists and/or maintenance personnel.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in machining, mold repair, and fabrication, preferably within a manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency in operating manual lathes, milling machines, grinders, and other machine equipment.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
  • Experience in developing or upgrading manufacturing repair areas, including the integration of new technologies, is an advantage.
  • Solid understanding of technical documentation, including part specifications and repair procedures.
  • High attention to detail with a demonstrated ability to produce precise, high-quality components.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to think critically and perform effectively under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally for training and development.
