Job Overview
This role is embedded in the Operations Engineering group at our new state-of-the-art device manufacturing facility in North Charleston, South Carolina. Together with the rest of the team, you will drive and support our packaging technology, automation, materials, specifications, suppliers, and testing. You will work closely with other key stakeholders, both locally and globally, to improve packaging approach for reliability and cost. Along with owning local packaging technologies, this role as a Project Engineer will allow for support of other projects within the department, as well as ownership of non-packaging specific engineering projects.
Main Responsibilities
- Primary SME for automated and manual packaging equipment, materials, and processes, from internal packaging/transportation goods to final cartoning, palletization, storage, and shipping
- Collaborate with production technicians, quality representatives, maintenance, and engineering peers to improve process & equipment reliability for the core packaging steps to meet all customer, business & regulatory requirements
- Lead the local development of improvement plans, including identifying alternative packaging methods, new equipment, and working with our internal intralogistics engineers on site packaging technology integration
- Interface with global counterparts to ensure consistent specifications, materials, and packaging approach
- Lead and support troubleshooting and issue resolution of packaging related shop-floor challenges, deviations and non-conformances
- As a project engineer, support team members on automated manufacturing equipment and system projects
- Lead non-packaging specific manufacturing projects, coordinating internal/external resources, providing technical input where necessary, and delivering robust solutions against determined budgets and timelines
- Manage technology transfer (receiver function) of new products and processes into mass production
- Work with engineering peers to ensure packaging methods and technologies are compatible with SHL’s internal Automated Storage and Retreival System (ASRS) and automated Pallet Warehouse (PWH)
- Support acceptance testing and validation activities as necessary
- Promote use of new technologies and industry-leading trends. Provide highest level of technical expertise
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent education/experience
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in industry working on packaging solutions
- Experience with CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks preferred)
- Knowledge of common problem-solving and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) methodologies
Preferred: (nice to have)
- Experience working in the medical device (or similarly regulated) industry
- Experience translating customer requirements to internal specifications
- Ability to self-manage complex engineering projects with support from colleagues and management
- Statistical analysis knowledge, including an understanding of how to execute Design of Experiments (DoE)
